Leading repairs and maintenance provider Morrison, which was awarded Thurrock Council's housing repairs contract in March has now commenced work in the area and has already carried out over 1,100 repairs in the first three weeks of the contract.

The company, which is providing a range of repairs and maintenance services to Thurrock Council's 10,350 properties, has also taken considerable steps in delivering on its commitments to support local businesses and create jobs and apprenticeships in the area.

Since the contract commenced at the beginning of August, Morrison has TUPE'd across 36 members of staff from Thurrock Council and has created new employment opportunities with the recruitment of 15 new employees from the local area. The new employees are all administrative staff and are based at Morrison's new office in Thurrock, which has been set up to ensure Morrison can mobilise its resources efficiently around the area.

Morrison has also recruited two apprentices from the local area, who will join the company in September as an apprentice plumber and an apprentice electrician. Both apprentices have a three year contract with Morrison and will also be supported through college as part of their training.

Thurrock Trade School, which provides construction skills for 14 to 16 year olds, is also receiving support from Morrison through the provision of new tools and equipment, as well as providing trained trade personnel to act as mentors to the 18 registered pupils.

Morrison has also developed a local supply chain network, which has created new opportunities for local businesses. Following a successful supplier open day earlier in the summer, Morrison has now established a supply chain of 15 local companies including sub-contractors and specialist material providers to work on the contract.

Simon Hayes, Managing Director for the South, Morrison said: "We are pleased with the start we have had in Thurrock and are delighted to be able to welcome 17 new members of staff to Morrison as well as our 36 new colleagues who have transferred over from Thurrock. We look forward to continuing to work with the Council to deliver a first class repairs service to its residents.

"Our new operational base in the centre of Thurrock is part of our commitment to establishing our business in the area and will also assist us in minimising our carbon footprint as we deliver our services.

"Morrison is committed to delivering on its commitments to the local community and we are pleased to be able to work with the Trade School to help provide support to the area's youngsters."
