MORRISON HAVERING
Soccer Project
The soccer project was run jointly by Homes in Havering Community Development Team and Morrison. Morrison donated all the equipment and a football coach, that being Tony Watkins Resident Liaison Manager for Havering. Tony is a qualified FA Coach and was delighted to be involved in the project.
The football-training programme was open to male and female young residents every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the Summer school holiday. The under 12’s took part from 10am until 12.00 and over 12’s took part from 12.00 until 2pm.
In addition to developing football skills the programme also promoted a healthy lifestyle – by engaging young people in physical activity to meet recommended daily levels. Social inclusion – by engaging hard to reach groups in particular, those from ethnic minority groups and young women and girls. Community safety – by engaging young people in purposeful activity to divert them from crime and anti-social behaviour. Personal development – through acquisition of life skills like, leadership, responsible citizenry, communication, social and problem solving skills.
'This project has been a great success and I would like to thank Morrison for making this happen', said Joan Miller Community Development manager for Homes in Havering. 'We look forward to future commitments with our partners in more local community projects.'
The final day saw a mini tournament followed by a prize-giving day. Presentations were made by Mike Gammack Senior Partnering Manger of Morrison and along with the Chair of Community Housing Group. Players received signed balls and shirts from West Ham & England’s Dean Aston. All players received a Morrison goodie bag and certificates, some were awarded with trophies for outstanding attitude and most improved player
Football Coach Tony Watkins RLM of Morrison also received a trophy, thanking him for his time and effort before and during the project.
