FM help St Andrews Community Hospital go green
The FM team who help maintain St Andrews Community Hospital up in Scotland have recently given their green campaign an extra boost by tidying up the grounds.
The St Andrews Community Hospital caters for long term patients from the Fife area and the idea of a garden improvements plan was to encourage the patients to have an interest in the wildlife that inhabit the grounds. Our FM business at St Andrews Community Hospital recently employed a new team member Andy Browning to join the existing team of Paul Cook and Kenny Biskup so they could add the maintenance of the grounds and gardens, window cleaning and pest control to the existing list of reactive and PPM works that the team carry out as part of their maintenance contract with the hospital.
To support their new garden maintenance initiative, a selection of FM team members including Tony Smith, Marc Martin, Paul, Kenny and Contract Manager Lynn Peebles carried out some sterling gardening work in the hospital grounds this Autumn. The projects for the day included putting up nesting boxes and bird feeding tables, not only to promote the local wild bird population but also to give an interest to patients who have access to the therapeutic gardens from a terrace and can oversee the nesting boxes and feeding stations from their wards. Bird books and binoculars have been provided for the patients and visitors in the day rooms.
The team also arranged for 12 varieties of wildflower seeds to be sown around the gardens which will provide a sustainable food supply for the bird population, as well as a welcome floral display around the perimeter of the hospital. Compost bins and tumblers are already on site and plans are now in place to recycle the garden waste, providing compost which will be available to the staff and patients for a small charitable donation.
The team already have the intention to put in a worm farm for next year at the hospital and are in the process of making insect and bat boxes to help the soil as well as being a good source of food for the young birds.
Well done to the FM team for bringing a little more nature into the hospital and to all the people that helped make St Andrews go green!
