A surplus stock of old IT equipment at Morrison North East in Gateshead required an innovative disposal solution. Luckily, County Durham Furniture Help Scheme came to the rescue, providing a solution that benefitted both parties!

After the decision was taken to replace the Gateshead offices'monitors, base units, keyboards and mice with new updated equipment, managers were faced with a bit of a problem. All of the old surplus stock needed to find a new home, and fast! However, an unlikely solution presented itself when the County Durham Furniture Help Scheme (CDFHS) said that they would take all the IT equipment, wipe clean the pc hard drives, and then distribute them to under privileged people and organisations and communities in need of equipment.

The County Durham Furniture Help Scheme is a registered charity that relieves poverty by the provision of a furniture and household goods recycling service to those people resident in County Durham who are in need. Further to this, the Scheme also provide opportunities for people by providing work experience, community work and training schemes around the area and further afield. It is managed and run entirely by volunteers, most of whom are disabled or sensory impaired.

Steve Mitton, Business Development Manager for the CDHFS, said ‘Thank you very much to Morrison for their very kind donation to the CDHFS. The IT equipment will be distributed to people across County Durham who otherwise wouldn't have been able to afford a pc or a monitor'. Morrison North East are hoping to work more with the CDHFS in the future so this may well be the start of a great new working relationship. Well done to the team for giving back to the community!
