Taking a Walk on the Wild Side
When Christchurch Primary School in Birmingham asked the local community for help improving their premises, Morrison Midlands were more than happy to get involved.
Situated in one of the most deprived areas of England, Christchurch school recently took an active stance in trying to clean up the areas surrounding their buildings to make their community a more attractive and safe environment. To this end, Morrison Midlands Office Manager Gill King joined forces with Christchurch's learning mentor Mr Mo Muhsen, together with the school's pupil council, community police, Midland Heart staff and parents to see how they could help make this a reality.
As a result of the meeting, Morrison pledged their support to work with all parties involved to clear the overgrown school grounds, install a new wall and flower bed to the entrance area and to create allotments for the school's garden club. Local gardening store Akamba also pledged their help to design and create a new "jungle" themed area in the grounds that the local community could enjoy.
Morrison Midlands workers Gill King; Les McPartland; Mitch Bardsley from Morrison met up bright and early on the day to get started, together with volunteers from subcontractor Dial-a-Jet Paul Roberts; Mark Walton; Steven Giles; Luke Tomlinson and Tony Sparrow who had kindly offered their support to the project.
The team quickly got stuck into chopping down the jungle of overgrown trees and shrubs. The work took all day and was by no means easy. However, the difference made was clearly visible to all afterwards and all the hard work paid off, leaving the ground clear for the jungle-themed nature area to be designed for the whole of the local community to visit and use in the future.
Gill King was proud of the group effort that enabled the transformation, saying: "I can honestly say this project really touched me, Mo Muhsen is extremely passionate about his school and what he wants to achieve for the pupils and community, and I look forward to continuing to work with the school and to completing more projects with them in the future."
