Battling Waste With Eco Warriors

The team at Morrison Midland Heart recently took the lead in an event aimed to raise the awareness of the Environment at nearby St Francis primary school.

Morrison ran a day long workshop with 5 members of staff working with the children to carry out a waste audit of rubbish collected over a period of one week by the school. After the group introduced themselves and gave an overview of the aims for the day, the students started with a series of paper based challenges and colouring exercises to help them interact with each other and start thinking of impacts of waste, including guessing the energy costs of some household items. The group then collected the bags of rubbish and had to weigh each individual bag and record their findings.

The students were also given the task of naming their newly formed environmental group, which, several innovative suggestions later, became the "Eco Soldiers." The new green team created an action plan about how they could improve the school waste/recycling process and enjoyed decorating a green notice board donated by Morrison to showcase to the rest of the school all about their group and activities of the day.

Morrison gave all the students energy saving light bulbs to take home and donated a box of 40 power-down devices to the school. A tree was also donated to the students for planting in the grounds, ensuring that St Francis school was a lot greener than it had been at the beginning of the day. Well done to Gill King and all the Morrison staff who made the Eco Warrior's day such a success.
